Metal Stamping: A Versatile Manufacturing Process

What is Metal Stamping?

Metal stamping is a manufacturing process that uses molds and punching machines to form sheet metal into various shapes.  It is a versatile process that can be used to produce a wide range of parts from small components to large structural elements.

The metal stamping process typically includes the following steps:

  • Material Preparation: The first step is to select the appropriate metal sheet for the application.  The thickness and type of metal will depend on the desired part properties.  The metal plates are then cleaned and inspected to remove any defects.
  • Blanking: Blanking is the process of cutting out the desired shape from sheet metal.  This is done using punches and dies.  A punch is a sharp tool that presses metal into a mold to create the desired part shape.
  • Forming: After the parts are die-cut, they can be further formed into more complex shapes.  This can be done using a variety of techniques such as bending, stretching and flanging.
  • Trimming: Trimming is the process of removing excess material from the edges of a part.  This is done using a trim die, which has a slightly smaller opening than a blanking die.
  • Punching: Punching is the process of making holes in a part.  This is done using punches and dies.  The punch has a sharp tip that pierces the metal, while the die has a hole that the metal is forced through.
  • Deburring: Deburring is the process of removing any burrs or sharp edges on a part.  This is done through a variety of methods such as tumbling, grinding and polishing.
  • Cleaning: The final step is to clean the parts to remove dirt, grease, or other contaminants.
